De afgelopen dagen was ik in Barcelona. Later meer over Gaudi, Picasso, de zee, Santa Maria del Mar, de taal, de processies, het eten en de markt. Nu eerst mijn bezoek aan het Museu Tèxtil i d’Indumentària waar ik mijn ogen uit keek. 

Deze kousen zijn van een zulk fijn breiwerk dat ik me bijna schaamde over mijn grove wollen sokken. Het moet zijn gebreid (?) met naalden 0,5 of zo met zuivere zijde. Het borduurwerk (kous links) is ook gedaan met hele kleine en fijne steken. De roomwitte kous heeft een ingebreid patroon. Och erme, ook dat nog op die dunne naaldjes.

Mariaelena Roqué ontwerpt theaterkostuums voor Carlos Santos. Ik had van geen van beiden nog gehoord, maar dat ligt aan mij. De kostuums zitten nu in mijn geheugen gebrand! Roqué was ooit danseres en daarom zegt elke folder dat ze het lichaam als uitgangspunt neemt. Gek genoeg vroeg ik me bij elk kostuum af hoe je erin moest en of je je er nog wel in kon bewegen. Op de films hadden de kostuums iets statisch. Mooi statisch. Dat wel. De beweging komt van het lichtspel met de materialen of van het kostuum dat deint op een arm die reikt…

Roqué mengt stijlen van daar en toen – Egypte, Griekenland, de Renaissance, 18e en 19e eeuw – met de mode van nu. Daarom stonden ze in een aantal gevallen ook opgesteld tussen de historische kleding. Een groep kazuifels met mijters was dus te vinden in de zaal tussen de middeleeuwse kerkkleding.

De kostuums zijn gemaakt van alles. Prachtig brokaat, glanzend fluweel, vilt, maar ook telefoonkabels, knikkers en plastic.’t Hangt er natuurlijk van af waar de kostuums voor zijn bedoeld, maar Roqué kan heel sober zijn, of spetteren met kleur. Het was een genoegen Mariaelena te leren kennen.

There were socks of such fine knitting that I almost felt ashamed about my rough woollen socks. The socks must be knitted (?) with needles 0,5 or something like this and with pure silk. The embroidery is done with even finer little stitches. The cream stockings have a lace pattern. Yes.
Mariaelena Roqué designs theatre costumes for Carlos Santos. I never heard of either one, but that’s my fault. I won’t forget the costumes. Roqué once was a dancer and that’s why every biography tells you the body is the core of her work. Not the moving body. In the films the costumes looked static, but beautiful. The light and the materials make the movement. Roqué mixes styles of there and then – Egypt, Greece, Renaissance, 18th and19th century – with today’s fashion. That’s why some of the costumes were exhibited amongst the historical clothing. 
Roqué uses almost everything to make the costumes. Exquisite brocade, shiny velvet, felt, but also telephone cables, marbles and plastic. It depends on its use, but Roqué can be very austere or use smashing colours. It was a pleasure to meet Mariaelena.
