Vanaf dat ik ze zag in de Interweave Knits van winter 2006 wilde ik ze hebben: de ‘Wine and Roses mitts’ van JoLene Treace. Ik koos Drops Alpaca 8120 als materiaal. De kleur is grijs met vaag rose en blauw en de alpaca is zacht. Ik vind ze zo mooi geworden. Ik doe geen stap naar buiten zonder mijn ‘w+r mitts’. Het meisje van de bakker, de groentenman en de pasfotograaf vonden ze al mooi. Nu jij nog.

From the first moment I saw them in Interweave Knits winter 2006 I wanted to have them: the ‘Wine and Roses mitts’ by JoLene Treace. I picked out Drops Alpaca 8120. The colour is grey, but what sort! There is a bit of pink in it, and light blue and the alpaca is so soft. I think they are beautiful. I’m not going outside anymore without my ‘w+r mitts’. The girl in the bakery, the greengrocer and the passport photographer already liked them.

Je moet het je zo voorstellen: wat eerst vanzelfsprekend was, wordt flink nadenken. Het Noorse breien. Maar met één draad over die wijsvinger ging het op een gegeven moment best lekker. Ik oefende op de mouwen van mijn Sit Com Chic. ‘t Valt best mee om een nieuwe techniek in de vingers te krijgen. Dacht ik. Maar ik had buiten Hadewych - de cursusleidster -  gerekend. Ineens moest ik met twee draden over diezelfde vinger breien. Een hele uitdaging. Wat heet. Het is geworstel van de bovenste plank. Maar af en toe heb ik nu al een ritme. Snel gaat het niet, maar dat hoeft niet. Als ik straks maar leuke wanten en zo kan breien. Toch?!

Imagine, a matter of course requires from now on seriously thinking. Norwegian knitting. But with one thread on the index finger I came along fine. I practiced on the sleeves of my Sit Com Chic. Learning a new technique turned out better than expected, I thought. But I didn’t reckon with Hadewych, the teacher. All of a sudden I had to work with two threads on the same indexfinger. Quite a challenge. To be honouse: a struggle. But now and then there is a rhythm. Fast is something different, but that’s not necessary. As long as I can knit nice mittens later. Don’t you think?

Her name is Heidi and she is from Finland. And I promised her not to snoop around on the internet to find her. That’s what Ysolda also told me, because Heidi was her SP too. She’s awesome, she let me know. And yes, she was right in all respects. Look, what I found in the box! The wonderful book Folk Mittens with beautiful, soft, real wool, brightly coloured Vuorelman Satakieli yarn in white and royal blue to make mittens. As if that was not enough, I also found beautiful needles with turned ends and the Secret Life of a Knitter by Yarn Harlot in the box. Great to read on the train when it is too crowded to knit. Dear SP Heidi: thank you very, very much! You are - indeed - awsome!

Our SP11 hostess wrote us a message about a contest. Mari can’t decide what to do with natural white alpaca-silk blend yarn. In advising her, we can win some yarn (what yarn? any yarn! who bothers: yarn). So, this is my idea:
White alpaca-silk … evokes images of elegance, soft stylishness and winter chic. So, Mari, if I were you, I would knit Claude by Anna Bell.

De kapper had capaciteitsproblemen en het duurde nogal lang vandaag. Echt erg was het niet. Buiten goot het en ik had mijn Charade om te breien. Kapster Désirée had bovendien een nieuwe service: de kleuranalyse. Ik val onder de koele kleurtypes en ik kreeg een schattig koele kleurenwaaiertje. De Charade kleuren passen er helemaal in. Kloek besluit: weg met het rode haar! Lang genoeg warm type geweest. Mijn nieuwe look is koel donker asblond. Stap voor stap nader ik Catherine Deneuve. En mijn Charadesokken zijn klaar.

The hairdresser was badly understaffed so it took quite a while today. I didn’t really mind. Outside it rained cats and dogs and I had my Charade to knit. Besides, hairdresser Désirée had a new service: a colour advice. I’m a cool colour type and she gave me a cute little cool colour fan. The Charade colours are perfectly right. I took a brave decision : away with the read head! I was a warm type long enough. My new look is cool dark ash blond. 
At a slow pace I near Catherine Deneuve. And my Charades are finished.
