Imagine, you come home death tired. You can think but one thing: knit some rows and go to sleep. And then you find a big, big box on the small table in the hall. From my secret pal? Yes. That fast? Yes. It’s spoiling pal and not secret pal. In very soft and fine paper in beautiful blue or with drawings of (Victorian) garden tools I found such fine presents. A fine red Chinese étui, a delicious smelling hand crafted soap and a very, very nice booklet with Californian native flowers and (!) squared paper. I love squared paper. And now for the knitting part of the box! My spoiling pal gave me wonderful rosewood sock needles made from the leftovers of the musical instruments production and, and, and… lustrous and ravishing emerald Sock! Merino from Lisa Souza. The colours remind me of the emerald costumes from the Balanchine ballet. Dear spoiling pal, thank you, thank you very much! I have forgotten my tiredness.

Waar een meloen al niet goed voor is… voor iemand die via de chemocapsite van Carla vroeg om een mutsje ging ik weer aan de slag. Ik begon met het garen van Smoekk!!!. Prachtig en zacht, maar mijn naaldjes werden net zo rood als het garen. Da’s niet handig. Naar de buurtbreiwinkel. Daar vond ik tussen alle praatjes Rosato van Schachenmayr Nomotta in een lindengroene tint. Lekker zacht en een beetje pluizig. Ik breide een simpel mutsje en haakte een bloem erop. Leuk toch?

Fifty ways to use a melon… for someone who asked for a cap via Carla’s chemocapsite I restarted my capknitting. First with the yarn I got from Smoekk!!!. Beautiful and soft, but my little needles got as red as the yarn. Not so convenient. Up to the neighbourhood-knittingshop. In between all the small talk I found Rosato by Schachenmayr Nomotta in lime. Really soft and a bit fluffy. I knitted a simple cap and put a crocheted flower on it. Isn’t it nice? 

Op zoek naar een cadeautje voor mijn schoonmoeder kwam ik terecht bij Den Haan & Wagenmaker, vroeger een hele grote winkel voor quilters nu een gespecialiseerde winkel in stoffen met oud-Hollandse dessins. Daar bladerde ik gedachteloos in een boek. Gaandeweg bleef één gedachte hangen: dit moet ik hebben. L’étoffe du relief is de catalogus van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Musée d’Art et Histoire uit Genève. Het boek staat vol schitterende foto’s van kleding, meubels, quilts en andere huiselijke zaken die op de een of andere manier gebruik maken van de techniek ‘matelassage’ - het watteren, capitionneren. De foto’s zijn zo mooi dat je de stoffen bijna kunt voelen. Het boek is een must voor iedereen die van stoffen, quilten en geschiedenis houdt.

Searching a present for my mother in law I went to Den Haan & Wagenmaker. In former times a huge shop, now it’s specialised in historically inspired Dutch designs chintzes. I glanced absently in a book. Gradually one thought stayed: I must have this book. L’étoffe du relief is the catalogue of the exhibition of the same name in the Musée d’Art et Histoire in Genève. The book has lots of beautiful photo’s of garments, furniture, quilts and other domestic things that are made using the technique of ’matelassage’ - padding, stuffing.  The photo’s are high quality, you can almost feel the fabric. The book is a must have for everyone who loves fabrics, quilting and history.

Hoezo vrije dag? Om half negen plukte ik Lies van Lelylaan en reden we naar Den Bosch voor de Handwerkbeurs. In het midden van de hal stonden tafels en daarmee creëerden we ons Stitch ‘n Bitch ‘breicafé’. We waren met veel en uit heel Nederland. We stalden ons werk uit, pakten ons werk en gingen aan de slag. Maar ja… het was zoiets als kat op spek, of luilekkerland of in de bonbonwinkel. Steeds verdwenen er breisters die terugkwamen met zakjes. Ik vond leuke dingetjes voor de ‘magische bolruil’, maar wat vertel ik hier niet. Bij Mur (Ela sokkenjuf van, was dat echt pas, februari?) kocht ik prachtig 100% Alpaca van Drops in zachtgroen 7300 en mosgroen 7238 (groen, groen, groen). En, vreugdedans, 3 bollen roomwitte Eskimo waar ik superleuke slofjes van ga haken. Het was een leuke maar vermoeiende dag, waarin we vooral veel opzien baarden omdat we met satéstokjes zaten te breien.

Day off? What day off? Half past eight I met Lies on Lelylaan station and together we drove to the Handwerkbeurs. In the centre of the market we created our Stitch ‘n Bitch ‘knitting café’. There were a lot of us from all over the country. We put our projects on the tables and got down to work. But, yes, it was something like set the fox to watch the geese, trust the cat to keep the cream, Cockaigne, land of plenty or the chocolate shop.
All the time knitters disappeared and came back with plastic bags. I found nice things for the Dutch Magic Yarn Ball Swap, but I’m not going to tell what. At Mur’s (Ela sockteacher of, was it really just, February?) I bought beautiful 100% Alpaca by Drops in softgreen 7300 and moss-green 7238 (green, green, green). And, dance of joy, 3 skeins offwhite Eskimo of which I will make supernice housesocks. It was a nice but tiring day in which we caused quite a fuss with knitting with our ‘satéstokjes‘ (skewers).
